Blue Kentucky Highway

*disclaimer* although posted on 7/4, this post was written on 7/3.

We greeted the sun this morning on a beautiful farm in somewhere, KY.

After a safe and relatively uneventful trip to Raleigh last night, we had our first minor hiccup at Budget rental.  Expecting a Prius hatchback, we were instead presented with a Ford Fusion Hybrid sedan.  Though super roomy, it doesn't offer the fold-down seating option in the back.  However, after viewing Budget's other options (a Prius not being one them), we stuck with the  Fusion.  We then promptly dropped the Subaru off and headed northwest.

When Mount Airy presented no open dinner options, we chowed down on a gas station turkey sandwich and pre-packed goldfish and pressed on to the commonwealth of Virginia.  Will drove through the night -fueled on Mellow Yellow- as I tried my best to nap in a ball on the backseat.  Alas, the winding mountainous West Virginia roads proved to be too jostling for a good rest.

But instead of stopping, we pressed on...

and landed on a dirt road in Hillsboro, KY at 4:00am searching for Will's great-great-great-grandfather's (et al) tombstone (to no avail).

So we parked the Fusion and napped our exhausted selves under a vast Kentucky sky.

So peaceful.

A few hours later, we set out in daylight in search of the graveyard.

And we found it.

Overgrown, weeds taller than Will

Poison ivy as far as the eye could see

We found it.

Oh, well...

Next order of business was, of course, a delicious Kentucky breakfast.  And we had to find out if Kentucky makes biscuits as yummy as North Carolina.

We yelped the best morning eateries in nearby Winchester, KY and discovered a quaint little diner named...wait for it...Stinky and Coco's.

As for now, service is sketchy and I'm having trouble uploading photos onto the blog.   Check back later for more goodness from across the plains!
